A vibrating screen is a machine that separates aggregates by particle size using stimulating forces applied to the machine. Vibration pushes the material, causing it to stratify and resulting in smaller particles moving from the top of the material depth to the bottom, exposing them on the screen surface.

Screening is one of the most critical parts of the sand and gravel aggregate production process. It occurs before and/or after the crushing stage and produces the final product of the required specifications.

The purpose of screening is to break up a stream of aggregated particles into uniform sizes. This is achieved by using a vibrating screen.

How many layers are needed for a sand and gravel vibrating screen?

Vibrating screens can be configured with one, two, three, or four layers. Three-layer screening is common in the industry, but the number of screen layers depends on the quantity of product to be produced on-site.

Vibrating screens are available in various sizes to meet different types of materials and production needs. The screen size is usually determined by the mesh size, which refers to the number of holes per inch of linear length. The larger the mesh size, the smaller the holes, and the greater the screening capacity.

Common mesh sizes sold by aggregate screen manufacturers include:

3/8 inch - Commonly used for screening sand and gravel

1/2 inch - Commonly used for screening crushed stone

5/8 inch - Commonly used for screening larger-sized crushed stone

3/4 inch - Commonly used for screening asphalt or concrete mixtures

1 inch - Commonly used for screening large-sized materials, such as large rocks

It is worth noting that in addition to these common sizes, other mesh sizes are available, depending on the specific application and the material being screened. In addition, some screens may use multi-layered meshes with different grid sizes to achieve more precise material screening and separation.
