Crude Palm Oil (CPO) is the unrefined oil extracted from the fibrous mesocarp (flesh) of the fruit of the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). It is the foundational product of the global palm oil industry, distinguished by its high content of saturated and unsaturated fats, natural red-orange color due to carotenes, and semi-solid consistency at room temperature.
CPO is the primary raw material for a vast range of downstream products, including refined cooking oil, margarines, shortenings, oleochemicals, and biodiesel.
Key Characteristics
- Natural Color: CPO is naturally deep red-orange, indicating a high concentration of beta-carotene (Provitamin A), which is removed during the refining process (creating RBD Palm Oil).
- Semi-Solid State: Due to its composition (approximately 50% saturated and 50% unsaturated fatty acids), CPO is semi-solid in temperate climates.
- Source of Refined Products: CPO is processed to produce RBD Palm Oil, RBD Palm Olein (CP8, CP10), and RBD Palm Stearin.
