Reproduction

• Spawning: After feeding in the ocean, salmon return to their freshwater natal streams to reproduce. 

Color: Ocean-dwelling salmon have a silvery-blue back and white belly. As they migrate upstream to spawn, their bodies turn a brilliant red, with males often developing green or red mottled skin and a hooked jaw. 

Fins: They possess all the typical fins, including a unique adipose fin. 

Scales: All salmon have scales, though some species have fewer or smaller scales than others. 

Teeth: They have well-developed teeth for catching prey. 

Lifespan: Salmon live for a few to several years, with most dying after spawning. 

Life Cycle: Salmon are born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean for a period, and then return to freshwater to spawn and die. 

Mating: During spawning, males develop distinctive hooked jaws and bright colors, while females dig gravel nests (redds).
