- sulfuric acid
- phosphorus fertilizers
- plant protection chemicals
- steel industry.
It is also used to lower the pH of alkaline soils and to reclaim sodic soils. Granular sulfur can apply directly to the soil or as an additive to N-P-K fertilizers. However, granular sulfur must be oxidized by soil microorganisms to sulfate (SO4-2), which is the plant-available form of sulfur. The oxidation rate depends on several factors, such as particle size, soil temperature, moisture, and microbial activity. The smaller the particle size, the faster the oxidation. Therefore, granular sulfur should be finely ground and uniformly distributed throughout the soil to increase its effectiveness. Granular sulfur should also be applied well in advance of crop need, preferably before planting, and incorporated into the soil.
