About HMS 1 & 2

HMS is an internationally recognized designation for ferrous scrap metal used primarily in steelmaking. The letters stand for "Heavy Melting Steel," and this category includes steel scrap that is shredded or broken down from steel products such as ship plates, railroad rails, industrial equipment, and household goods.

There are two common grades:

• HMS 1: Comprises wrought iron or steel scrap pieces that are at least 1/4 inch thick (6.35 mm). Usually free of galvanized or blackened surface coatings, HMS 1 offers higher quality and less contamination.
• HMS 2: Pieces that are 1/8 inch thick (3.18 mm) or more, allowing some thinner scrap including galvanized steel. It offers a broader range of materials but may include a higher proportion of coatings and surface treatments.

Characteristics and Quality Standards

HMS grades are categorized by thickness, size, and cleanliness, affecting their acceptance and pricing by steel producers:

• Typical thickness: HMS 1 (≥6.35 mm), HMS 2 (≥3.18 mm)
• Size: Usually cut or broken pieces up to 60x60 cm (24x24 inches).
• Surface coatings: HMS 1 commonly free from galvanized coatings, HMS 2 may contain galvanized or blackened scrap.
• Impurities: Strict limits on non-ferrous metals, plastics, and other contaminants.
