Jet A1 fuel is a globally standardized aviation turbine fuel (ATF) used in commercial jet engines. It belongs to the kerosene family and is specifically engineered to deliver consistent combustion, safety, and performance across a wide range of operating environments—from tropical heat to high-altitude freezing conditions.

Key Physical & Chemical Properties

• Appearance: Clear to light straw-colored liquid, free from water and suspended particles
• Freezing Point: Maximum −47°C, ensuring fluidity at cruising altitudes
• Flash Point: Minimum 38°C, reducing fire risk during handling and storage
• Density: Typically 0.775 – 0.840 kg/L at 15°C
• Energy Content: High calorific value (~42.8–43.5 MJ/kg), providing efficient engine performance

Composition

Jet A1 is a refined kerosene fraction derived from crude oil, composed mainly of:

• Paraffins (alkanes)
• Cycloparaffins (naphthenes)
• Aromatics (limited to controlled percentages for combustion stability)

It also contains additives such as:

• Antioxidants – prevent fuel degradation
• Static dissipators – reduce static electricity buildup
• Corrosion inhibitors – protect fuel systems
• Fuel system icing inhibitors (FSII) – prevent ice crystal formation in extreme cold

Performance Characteristics

• Thermal Stability: Resists breakdown at high engine temperatures
• Clean Burning: Minimizes soot and deposits in turbine engines
• Lubricity: Provides necessary lubrication for fuel pumps and injectors
• Low Volatility: Reduces evaporation losses and vapor lock risks

Usage & Applications

Jet A1 is used in:

• Commercial passenger aircraft

• Some helicopters and auxiliary power units (APUs)

It is the primary aviation fuel for international flights, unlike Jet A (used mainly in the U.S.), due to its lower freezing point.
