What Is Jet Fuel?

Jet fuel is a specialized aviation fuel designed specifically for use in aircraft powered by gas-turbine engines. It is primarily used by commercial airlines, military aircraft, private jets, and helicopters. Jet fuel must meet rigorous standards to ensure safety, efficiency, and reliable engine performance under varying operating conditions.

Common Varieties and Grades of Jet Fuel

The two most widely used jet fuel types are:

• Jet A and Jet A-1: These kerosene-based fuels are the standard for commercial aviation worldwide. Jet A-1 has a lower freezing point (-47°C) than Jet A (-40°C), making it preferred in colder climates and international flights.
• TS-1: Predominantly used in Russia and some neighboring countries, TS-1 is also a kerosene-type fuel with similar characteristics to Jet A-1 but with a slightly different freezing point and additives.

Technical Properties of Jet Fuel

Jet fuel typically features the following characteristics:

• Density: Approximately 0.80 kg/L at 15°C.
• Flash Point: Around 38°C (minimum), ensuring safe handling and storage.
• Freezing Point: Varies by grade; Jet A-1 is typically -47°C, crucial to prevent fuel gelling at high altitudes.
• Energy Content: Jet fuel releases about 43 MJ/kg, providing powerful combustion energy.
• Additives: May include antioxidants, anti-static agents, and icing inhibitors to enhance performance and safety.

Production and Quality Standards

Jet fuel is produced primarily by refining crude oil through processes including distillation and hydrodesulfurization to meet strict purity and performance criteria. Quality assurance in jet fuel production involves comprehensive testing against standards such as:

• ASTM D1655: Standard specification for aviation turbine fuels widely adopted globally.
• DEF STAN 91-91: UK Ministry of Defence specification for jet fuels.
• ISO 8217: International standard for marine fuels that sometimes includes jet fuel grades.

These standards cover parameters such as density, viscosity, flash point, freezing point, sulfur content, and thermal stability.

Common Applications and Uses

Jet fuel is essential in powering various aircraft including:
