Lemon eucalyptus essential oil

Lemon eucalyptus essential oil is extracted from the leaves and branchlets of Corymbia citriodora, or the Lemon scented gum tree, of the Myrtle family (Myrtaceae).

The essential oil is a clear mobile colourless liquid, with a fresh, citrus-like, and mildly fruity odour with a pleasant woody background note. The active component(s) in a typical oil sample are Citronellal (75%), citronellol (6%) and neo-isopulegol (5.5%), Limonene (1-5%), Alpha pinene, Beta pinene and others.

The essential oil has antioxidant, anti-fungal, antiviral, and antiseptic, insect repelling, activities of the active substances. It is used in preventing mosquito and tick bites; treating muscle spasms, toenail fungus (onychomycosis), and osteoarthritis and other joint pain, and as an ingredient in chest rubs used to relieve congestion.

**Lemon eucalyptus essential oil (LEO) is the base from which Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) is made by increasing the content of p-menthane 3,8-diol (PMD) from the trace -2% in LEO upwards to 60-65%, by conversion of citronellal into PMD.

How to Use

Aromatherapy: Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil is used in aromatherapy, to relieve chronic pain of disease or injury to the acute pain of headaches, and muscle strains, and improve metabolism and circulation. It has specifically been praised for its effect on osteoarthritis. A carrier oil of choice should be selected before the dilution is done. Carrier oils are vegetable oils which reduce help the oil get into the skin, reducing the concentration without reducing potency. For every 15-30 drops of essential oil, use at least 10ml of carrier oil (Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil are excellent local options of carrier oils). Blend with carrier oil of choice prior to massage to minimize any skin sensitivity.

Inhalation: The essential oil can be inhaled to relieve sinus congestion, improve respiratory and immune health. Add six to eight drops to hot water in a bucket and use as a facial steam. Alternatively, add two to three drops in handkerchief, place over nose and inhale.

Using a Diffuser/Humidifier: Use three to four drops in diffuser of choice with clean water to generate the vapour. You can diffuse Lemon eucalyptus essential oil in the house to clear nasal passages and to help eliminate harmful airborne bacteria that contribute to the feeling of being unwell. It is also a great deodoriser. You may apply 5 to 10 drops according to your personal preference and the size of the room.

Insect bites: Lemon eucalyptus essential oil repel insects, and may also speed the healing of insect bites, particularly from mosquitoes, gnats, beetles, and biting flies. The oil can be applied on the skin in a balm (at least 5 drops in 30ml of carrier oil), which would make insect bites less likely.

Other Uses

Cleaning agent: Lemon eucalyptus essential oil can keep away ants, cockroaches, and mosquitoes in your house. Thanks to its antifungal properties, it’ll also get rid of mouldy spots too, and as a bathroom cleaner.

Antifungal use: Lemon eucalyptus essential oil can help relieve skin and nail fungus which cause itching, discomfort, and odours. Make yourself a blend of Tea Tree Oil (4 drops), Lemon Eucalyptus Oil (2 drops), Cinnamon Oil (2 drops), 10ml of coconut oil and dab the blend on the affected skin or toe area using a cotton ball.

Acaricide use: Lemon eucalyptus essential oil has been deemed beneficial for the control of ticks and mites in livestock populations, when used as a natural acaricide. The fumigant toxicity of Menthol, citronellyl , β-citronellol, citral, geranyl acetate and eugenol has been proofed in trials, and therefore lemon eucalyptus presents an alternative to synthetic acaricides. Its commercial application for this purpose is still under evaluation.
