Pure Zircon sand

Zircon sand specifications are defined by both chemical and physical properties, including a high percentage of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) and hafnium dioxide (HfO2), often >65.5% ZrO2+HfO2, and a low content of impurities like (Fe2O3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2). Physical specs include a typical specific gravity of 4.6–4.8 g/cm³, a bulk density of around 2700 kg/m³, and a wide range of particle sizes, often expressed in mesh sizes, to suit various applications like ceramics, refractories, and foundries.

Chemical Specifications

• Zirconium Dioxide (ZrO2) Content: This is a primary indicator of purity.
  • Minimum ZrO2 (+HfO2): Typically 65.5% or higher, depending on the grade.
  • Theoretical Composition: Zircon (ZrSiO4) contains a theoretical 67% zirconia and 32% silica.

Physical Specifications

• Specific Gravity: A measure of density for the material itself.
  • Range: Typically 4.6–4.8 g/cm³.

Applications-Specific Specs

• Ceramics: Used as opacifiers in glazes. Micronized grades (e.g., 5, 6, 9 micron) are used.

Impurities: Low levels are required for most applications.

• Fe2O3 (Iron Oxide): Generally limited to 0.05% or less for premium grades.
• TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide): Usually kept below 0.15% for high-purity applications.
• Al2O3 (Alumina): Also controlled, with limits set by grade.
• Free Silica: Kept at very low levels.

Bulk Density: The density of the loose, uncompacted material.

• Range: Around 2700 kg/m³ (or 165–175 lb/ft³) for uncompacted material.

Particle Size: Crucial for different applications.

• Mesh Sizes: Classified by mesh size (e.g., 100%, 60-200 mesh) or micronized grades (e.g., 5, 6, 9 micron for glazes).
• Particle Distribution: The d50 value (median particle size) is a key metric for opacifier grades.

Refractories & Foundry: Used for thermal resistance. These applications may use standard or prime calcined grades.
