About High Quality Wood Shavings

Wood shavings are thin, curly slices or particles of wood, typically produced during woodworking or planing processes. High quality wood shavings are distinguished by their cleanliness, uniform size, and absence of dust or large splinters, making them ideal for a variety of applications.

Packaging and Trade

Wood shavings are typically compressed into bales (17 - 23 kg, the volume of the uncompressed shavings is approximately 0.3 cubic meters) for efficient shipping and handling. They can be exported worldwide, with packaging designed to maintain dryness and prevent contamination during transit.

Common Varieties and Grades

Wood shavings come from various species, including:

• Softwood shavings: Derived from pine, cedar, fir, or spruce; popular for their light texture and scent.
• Hardwood shavings: Taken from oak, maple, beech, or birch; typically denser and longer-lasting.

Grades are generally determined by shaving thickness, length, moisture content, and purity. Premium grades have minimal dust, even particle size, and low moisture levels to prevent mold and decay.

Technical and Physical Characteristics

• Lightweight and highly absorbent
• Good cushioning and insulation properties
• Natural, biodegradable, and safe for animals
• Low dust and minimal contaminants in high quality grades

Common Uses and Applications

Wood shavings have broad applications including but not limited to:

• Animal bedding for horses, poultry, and small animals
• Packaging material to protect fragile items
• Mulching in gardens and landscaping
• Absorbents for industrial spills
• Component material in particleboards and composite wood products

Production and Harvesting Process

Wood shavings are produced by processing wood logs or lumber through specialized shaving machines, which slice thin curls from the timber surface. The wood source is often sustainably harvested, and freshly cut shavings are dried and screened to remove dust and oversized pieces, ensuring consistency and quality.

Quality and Grading Standards

Quality control includes checking for moisture content (usually below 15%), cleanliness, particle size uniformity, and absence of foreign materials. Some suppliers follow certifications related to sustainable forestry and environmental management to guarantee eco-friendly sourcing.
