Annual General Meeting

With over 160 000 employees, thousands of stores and a network of distribution centres across Africa, our customer-centric business remains committed to serving local communities with our lowest price promise, and 31 million Xtra Savings rewards customers already shop in our footprint of stores.

*Distribution of total operations as at 30 June 2024.

It is my privilege to present results that aptly reflect a year in which we remained focused on our business and what we stand for – being best-priced, in-stock, solution-driven and customer-led. Our 12.0% increase in Group sales equates to our core South African supermarkets customers spending R21.4 billion more with us this year. During a time when customers are incredibly pressured, this is the greatest reward for our efforts which come as a result of best-in-class execution, innovation and an unwavering dedication to serve.

The largest South African retailer by market capitalisation, sales, profit and number of employees and customers.

Since 1979, our Group has served African households by providing food at low prices. Growing from eight to 3 639 stores pays tribute to our dedication and unwavering commitment to our customers.

Key information from continuing operations for the 52 weeks ended 30 June 2024:

The communities we serve are always at the core of our business, which is why we’ve made it our responsibility to Act For Change. Join us as:

We work with a strong network of suppliers to provide our customers with the products they need and want, and are eager to partner with local small and medium-sized enterprises (SME).

In a South African grocery retail first, Checkers has taken to the skies in a specially branded aeroplane.

According to the South African Food Security Index 2024, developed by two economists from the University of Stellenbosch, food security is at its lowest point in over a decade.

Today the Shoprite Group opened its 100th Petshop Science store, with the opening of its newest location in Glen Marais, Kempton Park. It became the first local retailer to launch standalone pet shops in April 2021 in response to the country’s booming pet economy.

One of South Africa’s most trusted brands, Shoprite, this week set out to remind customers it continues to stand firm on a PROMISE originally made 45 years ago – when the supermarket chain first opened its doors – to provide people with access to essential goods and service at the lowest prices, even in the most challenging economic times.

Checkers Little Shop is back by popular demand, and this time with its largest ever collection of 44 collectable miniatures to surprise and delight both young customers and adults alike. The new minis are made from 100% recycled plastic, and to make playtime Xtra special, some of them also offer fun new features, including glow-in-the-dark, scratch and sniff, sparkle and much more.

Twenty-five years ago, a KwaZulu-Natal family launched a small enterprise with the goal of becoming Africa’s largest manufacturer of disposable hygiene products. Today, Cleopatra has a significantly expanded workforce and supplies millions of nappies each month to Shoprite, Checkers and Usave supermarkets across the African continent.

Growth of this nature, in a highly competitive market and from a high base can only be achieved as a result of across-the-board commitment. With this in mind, my sincere thanks are extended to Team Shoprite for their continued dedication to our customer base which numbers more than 30 million across South Africa, not including the nine other African countries throughout which we operate our food retail operations.

Business Overview

Avg Response Time

AFRICAN SUPERMARKETS LIMITED offers a wide range of core products including corn oil, vegetables, milk, tea, and bread — a full suite that fits well in local retail and food service chains. This product mix gives buyers a one-stop solution for daily essentials, reducing the need to source from multiple suppliers. However, none of the key verification points — work email, phone number, or business documents — have been confirmed. Without these, buyers can't fully verify the company's legitimacy or ensure reliable communication. Missing staff count and revenue range make it hard to assess the company's scale or operational stability. Buyers should request additional verification before placing large orders or sharing sensitive business details.
