Bay Shipping and Trading (BST) was established by the Chairman Mr Vajira Hurulle in 1980, for the purpose of shipping services including servicing crew recruitment for the major Japanese Reefer Cargo Company Toei Reefer Line Ltd. Established in 1959, Toei Reefer Line (TRL) is a pioneer in the industry, operating over 20 ultra-low temperature cargo ships. Besides being No.1 in the World in the transport of frozen sashimi tuna, TRL also delivers all supplies and equipment mid-sea to its vessels, thereby generating large cost savings. TRL? new, ultra-modern factory in Thailand, which processes a wide variety of lines (tuna, shrimps, salmon, mackerel, cuttlefish and squid) for ?ashimi?and ?ushi?is a major supplier to the Japanese market now, also offers these products including super-frozen tuna loin (-60c), to the Western markets as well. Since Mr Hurulle? move to the UK in 2001, he was given the mandate by TRL to explore business opportunities for importing super-frozen (-60c) processed tuna into the UK and to Europe. He introduced them to several major wholesale importers which supply the major supermarkets and restaurants in the country. BST has now gone into the processed and chilled tuna loin processing and export business with weekly shipments being made from Sri Lanka to the UK. The whole process from the time the whole fish is landed in Sri Lanka to the time it arrives in the UK is less than 24 hours in most cases. All the fish are ethically caught and processed according to EU and International stipulations at a state-of-the-art processing plant in Ja-ela in Sri Lanka, which is located in close proximity to the Colombo Airport. One of our other major strengths is that our tuna supplier purchases from around 1000 fishing boats based in the Indian Ocean, thereby giving us a distinct edge over our competitors. We are in a position to provide fish all the year-round.
