The Ginosar elite-cultivars of disease-free banana plants are the result of decades of stringent professional selection from our mother plantations, located in northern Israel. Ginosar developed unique expertise and agro-technical solutions to help grow superior-quality pineapple, even in unusual climate. For example, using a net shade to cover the plantation helps reduce temperatures and deal with extreme heat; heating the plantations and high density planting help deal with the cold winter, reduce natural flowering, and better control flowering time; using soil containers and a particular soil mix (coco peat, peat and volcanic ash) mimics the pineapple's preferred light and acidic soils, as opposed to the regional heavy and alkaline soil. Our advanced technology utilizes somatic embryogenesis. This involves taking meristematic tissue from the shoot tip or immature inflorescences of a selected adult Medjool date palm tree or its offshoots. A Result of Excellence This process is the culmination of years of research and development in state-of-the-art laboratories with global standards. Recently, our R&D team tackled the challenges associated with traditional green grafting (bud grafting) of grapevines. This conventional method requires a high-humidity environment to support tissue fusion, but such conditions often lead to mold and tissue rot, reducing success rates. By controlling the grafting conditions in our lab, we eliminate the risk of fungal contamination and ensure optimal conditions for tissue bonding. This process, while promising, presented unique challenges. The intricate nature of laboratory grafting required our development team to master exceptional precision and fine motor skills, as they worked with minute grafting components. Despite these hurdles, the team achieved remarkable success, demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of this innovative technique. - 🌿 Paradise Papaya Seedlings Now Available at Ginosar Agro! 🌿 We’re thrilled to announce that for the first time, we are offering Paradise Papaya seedlings for commercial sale. This variety thrives in diverse climates and is a top choice for growers aiming for high-quality harvests. As a result, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority (INPA) initiated a restoration project to rehabilitate the palms, an intigrate part of the local ecosystem. To date, preliminary embryos have been successfully obtained, marking an important step in the project’s progress. The primary goal is to preserve male trees, which play a vital role in maintaining the local ecosystem's balance. This project highlights the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and the role of innovative tissue culture techniques in environmental restoration efforts. * Interview with Hila Chen, Head of the Date Development Lab at Ginosar Agro 1. I come from a background in genetic engineering. I worked for several years in the field of organic pest control and have always loved working in labs and precision-based tasks. Over the years, I transitioned to fruit lab work and tissue culture development, focusing on dates palms. 2. We managed to increase the number of seedlings produced in the lab significantly—tenfold! 3. Describe the date production process. It’s a complex and lengthy process that takes about three years in the lab. It includes more than 20 stages and requires a very high level of expertise. What are the main challenges you and your team face in the development and production process? The main challenge is maintaining sterile and clean working conditions to prevent contamination. Another is developing protocols for various crops with multiple varieties and adapting the protocol for each specific variety. How is the connection between the lab work and the farmers reflected in your process? The collaboration starts when a farmer approaches us with a specific development need, and we provide a tailored solution. We maintain constant communication throughout the development and propagation process, providing updates and reports. Farmers sometimes supply additional plant material if needed. Once the seedlings transition to the field, an agronomist continues working closely with the farmer. Tell us briefly about your team. We work on both production and development of new varieties simultaneously. 9. What makes you most proud of your work? Successfully developing new protocols for ancient and rare plant varieties gives me the greatest sense of pride. We sat down with Yinon Ben Zur, the company’s CEO, to discuss recent achievements, challenges, and future goals.
