- All eyes are on U. S. freight and logistics to gauge the impact of President Trump's tariffs. In today's WSJ story, and I explain how indicators from containership arrivals to heavy-duty truck purchases give a possible glimpse of the future for the U. economy. We have lots of lovely charts showing: 📦 Retailers and manufacturers fueled a surge of imports earlier this year. 🚢 The number of containerships en route to Southern California ports is down sharply. 🎢 A global measure of supply-chain volatility indicates the largest slowdown in activity since the Covid pandemic. 🚛 Trucking companies are holding off on buying new big rigs. 📉 The Dow Jones Transportation Average is trailing the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average by more than 9 percentage points. - Today is day 534 of the Red Sea crisis. Yesterday US President Trump stated that the US would stop the bombings of Yemen and claimed the Houthies had said “they didn’t want to fight anymore”. He went on to say: “They have capitulated, but more importantly, we will take their word … they say they will not be blowing up ships anymore” The Foreign Minister of Oman also stated that Oman had mediated a ceasefire. Whether there is a ceasefire or not in relation to targeting shipping in the Red Sea can, at best, be said to be unclear. It is, however, quite clear that even if there is a deal this does not encompass Houthi attacks directly at Israel. It should also be kept in mind that in the beginning of 2025, the Houthies initiated a ceasefire with the argument that as long as there was a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in Gaza, they would stop shooting at ships. When the ceasefire was broken, the Houhies also resumed action. Given the current situation there is not a high probability that large merchant vessels will be in a rush to go back through the Red Sea. The situation between India and Pakistan escalated further as India conducted missile strikes within Pakistan and Pakistan claims to have shot down 5 Indian fighter aircraft. Vessels which have cargo from Pakistan onboard (even empties) are not allowed to call Indian ports. Container lines are adjusting their rotations. In terms of trade agreements, India and United Kingdom entered into a new trade agreement with both sides lowering tariffs and targeting increased trade. The deal took 3 years to agree and has a 10-year implementation period. This is not an unusual timeframe for negotiating complex trade agreements and juxtaposes the current US approach to negotiate rapid bilateral trade deals with all countries individually quite well. MSC announced that the Empire and Pelican services from Asia to USEC will be suspended. They adjust the rotation on the remaining 4 services and call it an interim network which will continue until demand returns to normal. Note that these are services shared with Zim. This is a semi-permanent removal of approx. 30% of MSC/Zim’s Asia-USEC capacity. Congestion issues in London Gateway has caused Hapag to divert the Atlantic CES service to Felixstowe, Maersk calls this TA5. This a service operated outside of Gemini
