Maiduguri Monday Market is the largest and most significant marketplace in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. Established in the early 1970s, the market was created to support growing commercial activities and initially located in Budum. It was later relocated to its current site, becoming a major commercial hub for northeastern Nigeria and neighboring countries such as Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. The market offers a wide array of goods, including foodstuffs, textiles, livestock, and traditional crafts. Over the years, the market has faced challenges, including fires and disruptions from the Boko Haram insurgency. A devastating fire in 1979 led to its reconstruction, and it was reopened in 1985. Another major fire occurred in February 2023, destroying approximately 13,000 shops. The market was remodelled with wider walkways and designated zones and reopened in October 2023. Despite these challenges, it remains a vital center for commerce and a cultural hub, bringing together diverse communities.
