Varieties and Grades

Rooibos tea is typically available in two main varieties: Red Rooibos and Green Rooibos. Red Rooibos undergoes oxidation which gives it a reddish-brown color and a mild, naturally sweet flavor with nutty undertones. Green Rooibos, on the other hand, is unoxidized and offers a fresher, more herbal and slightly grassy flavor profile. Within these types, grades differ largely based on leaf size and purity, affecting the intensity and clarity of the infusion.

Characteristics and Nutritional Properties

Rooibos tea is celebrated for its rich antioxidant content, including aspalathin and nothofagin, which contribute to heart health and minimize oxidative stress. Naturally caffeine-free and low in tannins, Rooibos is gentle on digestion and suitable for all ages. It also offers minerals such as calcium, manganese, and fluoride. Its smooth taste and natural sweetness often mean additives like sugar or milk are not necessary.

Harvesting and Production Process

Cultivated mainly in the Cederberg Mountains, the harvesting season runs from late summer to early autumn. The Rooibos plant is harvested by hand, then traditionally bruised or crushed to encourage oxidation, especially for red Rooibos. The leaves and stems are then sun-dried, sorted, and graded with careful attention to maintain organic integrity.

Common Uses and Applications

Beyond its popularity as a hot or iced tea, Rooibos can be blended with other herbs, fruits, or spices for unique tea blends. It is often used in tea-based beverages and mixtures, incorporated into wellness and beauty products, and prized for its calming properties and subtle sweetness. Rooibos tea also pairs well with traditional English teas and mate teas in assorted tea collections.
