The 940 farmers who grow the trees that bring you the nostalgic smell and feeling of a traditional North Carolina Christmas need your help. In a year where many saw the total devastation of the infrastructure around their farms and the loss of thousands of trees, the resiliency of our state’s growers is tremendous. Ranked second in the nation in number of trees harvested, N.C. Christmas tree farmers harvest over 3 million trees annually, with 22% of the real trees grown in the U.S. coming from North Carolina farms.
Peak soil season is the Agronomic Division's busiest time of year, receiving thousands of samples within a short amount of time. The numbers will begin to surge in mid-October as people rush to beat the peak soil season fees. During peak season, a peak-season fee of $4 is charged for the processing of all soil samples. Dates: November 27, 2024- March 31, 2025.
We recently hit a milestone with our Pesticide Disposal Assistance Program, keeping 5 million pounds of unwanted pesticides out of the landfill and ensuring they are properly disposed of. The Pesticide Disposal Program began in 1980 and strong collection efforts this year in Columbus, Sampson and Wake counties helped move the program over the 5-million-pound mark.
